I am writing in response to your letter of May 25, 2021, in which you express your concern about a TV interview of Mr. Ali Ehsassi, MP for Willowdale and the Government’s policy on Iran.
The Speaker is non-partisan and presides over the proceedings of the House to maintain order and decorum in the Chamber. The authority of the Speaker does not extend to actions taken by Members outside the Chamber.
As the presiding Chair, my actions must be impartial; this obliges me to refrain from involvement in public policy issues, including those that fall within the purview of the Government. This does not prevent me, however, from taking the liberty of forwarding your correspondence to the Honourable Marc Garneau, P.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs, for his information.
