Dear International Trade Union Confederation:
We are a registered not for profit organization comprised of a group of Canadians of Iranian origin, concerned about the situation in Iran and how it affects Canadians.
As you may or may not know, there have been worker’s strikes nationally in Iran’s oil, petrochemical, gas and energy plants going on since June 20th, 2021. The strikes are due to, amongst other things, the non-payment of wages, the payment of very low wages, dire work conditions, job insecurity, lack of minimal health and safety standards, and lack of recognition of international labour standards and conventions.
The current regime in Iran does not recognize the right to strike nor unionize and has in the past incorporated the practice of cutting the tongue of union leaders. We are very concerned about the fate of these workers. Thus far, reports indicate that at least 700 workers were fired and in some locations drinking water has been cut in order to stop the strikes.
Support
Workers from other industries have joined in and supported these strikes, as have bus drivers, retirement agencies, and teachers.
Internationally, the Federation of Global Industrial Syndicates, representing more than 50 million industrial workers in the automotive, oil, petrochemical and textile industries in countries around the world, have supported the strikes.
As the actions of the regime in Iran run counter to your stated principles, and supporting the striking workers accords to your stated principles and mandate, we are asking that you announce your support for the workers and their families in this time of need.
Your support can make the difference in bringing dignity to the lives of tens of thousands of workers and their families.
We look forward to your response.
Best Regards,
The Alliance of Iranian Canadians (AIC)
